Since XP is closed source, I'll never know why that is so, but XP has been doing ridge lift ever since I first tried it in 5.3 (they're final testing 8.40 now), and only recently (like somewhere around late 6 or early 7) got a good thermal model. 5.66 had thermals but not very good.
