There still appear to be problems with ATI's OpenGL support - not just with FG but with other applications as well. Nvidia 6600 based 256MB AGP cards (what I currently use and which works) are available in the UK for around 70 UKP - this should be in your price range. Incidentally, the latest Nvidia driver - 8756 - works with Xorg 7 (the 'modular' version). I had to build a debian package for nvidia-kernel from source but it worked on a GeForce 4MX based system - haven't updated my main workstation, with the 6600, yet.
DAMMIT. I _had_ been wishing to support DRI and ATI's (flakey) committment to supporting the open source driver efforts, but I'm not really passionate enough about it to sacrifice performance where my hard-earned is worth. So an NVidia it will be. I did discover some years ago, the last time I tried an ATI (and made the mistake of buying an 'SE' card), that if you leave even the slightest hint of an NVidia OpenGL library anywhere, the drivers will bork and do what they did, which was jack shit. That was when I bought the MX400. I do remember a comment somewhere on this list from someone backing Radeons to the hilt, but they appear to have been outvoted. I would still like to hear an experience from someone whos'e been able to get it to work, though. Incidentally, thanks to everyone's feedback on RAM etc. I have AGP (and now I find out that not only am I 32bits of processor behind the times, but there's this thing called 'PCIe'... ) My motherboard is definitely detecting the full RAM, so my kernel might need to be recompiled, which stopped scaring me about 7 years ago, so that's fine. I did find Kingston's motherboard compatibility page, but as I've never previously had problems with RAM I just went into my local shop and bought the only 1GB stick he had in stock. Cost me about half the quotes I had seen for Kingston. I'm crossing my fingers on the reliability issue. Now if only my Seagate SATA drive hadn't lost a sector last night, losing me my entire /usr/share directory and several other random files into the bargain, life would be sweet. All I can say is thank Thor for /var/cache/apt/archives and 'apt-get install --reinstall' and my habit of putting everything extra into $HOME or /usr/local. Happy flying.
