Ahh well, Thanks for trying though and I'll keep plunking at it.  You might can 
help me with some additional info though.

I did compile OpenAL first and and I let it go to /usr/local.  I have tried 
several different approaches on the OpenAL and if I try to run the autogen.sh I 
get warnings and errors and it tells me to run autoupdate but I can still 
compile openAL but I think this might be my first issue - what version of 
autotools are you running.  

I can actually get the OpenAL and FreeAlut to compile so that I end up with 
some libs and an cygopenal-0.dll and an cygalut dll also with a -0 like the 
cygopenal but then then Flightgear does not run.  But wait - once I compile 
openAL and FreeAlut do I also need to recompile plib, SimGear and FlightGear 
????

Also what configure options did you use????
