Writing as a 'kinda-n00b' in Linux. Have installed Kanotix 2005-4 Lite, a Debian spinoff, as I understand.
Kernel version 2.6.14.
Using Kpackage (package manager) to install FlightGear 10, and dependencies listed as:

depends
freeglut3, libalut0, libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6), libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.0), libglu1-xorg | libglu1, libice6, libjpeg62, libopenal0a, libsm6, libstdc++6 (>= 4.1.0), libx11-6, libxext6, libxi6, libxmu6, libxt6, plib1.8.4c2, simgear0 (>= 0.3.10-1), xlibmesa-gl | libgl1, zlib1g (>= 1:1.2.1), fgfs-base (>= 0.9.10)

Result of install:
