I am still learning by doing but would not change Blender against any 
other 3d-program anymore.
My "break-through" was doing this tutorial step by step - although it is 
for X-Plane the basic steps are the same for FlightGear.
Only uv-texturing is done with *.rgb files (-> Gimp graphic program) and 
the more advanced LOD-stuff is X-Plane specific.
