It really really shouldn't be that slow on your hardware.

What do gl-info give you if you run it?

My age old AMD Athlon XP1600+ give reasonable performance. Ok, my 
current graphics card is newer, but even my previous Geforce2 card was 
useable.

Make sure you are using the Nvidia drivers, otherwise all OpenGL 
operations are done in software - and that will be slow..
