I have this program called 'metar' which fetches METAR data from 
airports in the world. (I'm not on my system with FG installed, does FG 
provide it or did the binaries fairy drop it off?)

'metar kbuf' for example shows an update about once an hour, as often as 
the AWOS updates, right about 54 minutes after the hour. It's always 
been like that as long as I can remember.

I would think a METAR update every hour would be adequate.
