Craig, within the last year I bought two Nvidia 6600 GT 256 MB (one for
me, PCIe combined with AMD64 3700 and one for my son (AGP combined with
AMD 2500). After my opinion these card had a good price (about 140 EUR
here in Germany) and a good performance in it's class.
I built a complete new system with the AMD64 3700 so I have no
comparison but as my son got my old PC with an NVidia 5700? 128 MB and
wished a better card as a birthday present I was a little in doubt
whether this could improve performance with the older AMD 2500. But his
3D-games (no sim) with high-end graphics got a lot more speed so he
could turn on many graphic options compared to the old card.
It is very difficult to talk about framerates as it depends on the used
aircraft, scenery, objects, textures and checked options - but to give
you an idea how FG runs on my system: default scenery (KSFO, Cessna)
with nearly all options checked (only bumped mapped clouds unchecked)
and visibility increased (I don't love much fog) I get between 80 to 85
frames/sec when airborne. Sitting at the runway there is an decreased
rate of 45 which I cannot understand - once accelerating on the runway
it immediatley goes up to 85 although the same objects and scenery is
visible.
This framerate is also the same when I fly a scenery I am just creating
with many textured objects and a lot of trees.
Naturally, flying the Paris scenery is a heavy workload for my
processor/card combination, I don't remember the exact framerates but I
think it was partially down to 25.
These numbers are for FlightGear onWindows. I was very astonished that I
got a lot more frames with my new Linux installation (KSFO >> 100) but I
have to check this more thoroughly due to the fact that I just installed
all that stuff. I thought about the difference of the 64bit SuSE Linux
against the 32bit WinXP system, but I am not sure. Some people on the
German FlightGear Forum posted that FG runs slower on their Linux system
than on Windows, therefore I really was/am astonished and a little
doubtful, so I will check it further.
Craig, I hope these very personal informations help you a little, but I
cannot give you more precise and neutral observations.
Regards
Georg EDDW
