Thats correct. Its mostly one mesh, with a few buildings near the
edges on smaller additional meshes, and each individual building is
for the most part one face with the vertices nearest the base of
the building, as seen from google earth, aligned closely, and then
that face is just extruded into the sky. After creating the mesh
with enough buildings I jumped onto www.emporis.com, where I got
a list of heights of the 15-20 tallest, then back to Blender to
adjust the heights of the individual ones. The more notable buildings
get a texture based on what they really look like, but most get a
default texture from about 6 or 7 I've created/grabbed. All uv maps
are on one 1024x1024 rgb picture...

More efficient perhaps in modelling time, and it negates the need
to create multiple entries in the stg files (the placing of the
individual buildings in those would have taken ages!).

One downside is that the terrain is not flat under the model. It
would be cool to have a function where I can export a chunk of the
terrain to a mesh, but since I cannot get the scenery tools working
thats a moot point. The innaccurate river boundaries in the default
terrain are a hindrance, as the tallest scrapers are meant to sit
riverside, but not get wet feet... :-)

My aim is to have Brisbane look roughly like Brisbane, as I fly
into or out of its airspace. The modelling I'm doing is pretty
rough, but so long as you don't fly a Cessna between the scrapers
you likely will not see how roughly they're modelled...its the
view from a distance that gives a city its look, not the close-up
details... :-)

Kind regards,

Chris Wilkinson, Brisbane, Australia.
