I didn't know about the packages: OpenThreads, OpenSceneGraph - what are
these? The last I checked the install manual didn't mention these.

I doubt there is such a thing, packages are built and installed in the
following order from cvs sources.
alut
openal
freeglut
(from OpenSceneGraph)
Producer
OpenThreads
OpenSceneGraph
SimGear
FlightGear
I built mine back in November and it's still good under 10.3 Alpha1.
Some error information would help.
