I've had no problems on my Fedora Core 6 box with freeglut 2.4.0 .. But I configured to use SDL with "--enable-sdl" (on running configure) unless there's some reason you don't like SDL, perhaps give it a try?
I actually switched to SDL because I discovered that fullscreen mode doesn't work for me with glut .. for some reason..
