you the benefit of far more experienced people following along and
eventually helping you.

As you mention SuSE I realized I got confused by the -DPKGLIBDIR
option. I suspected some debian-specific stuff; that added to
something else I had in the back of my head as there was some talking
about the upcoming transition to gcc-4.2 on debian-announce and its
possible pitfalls.

But since you too use 4.2 one of those (mandatory explicitly including
every needed header) might be the cause here.

Not sure about the rpm stuff, but you checked for the pertinent devel
package being installed too? Although if not, you should probably not
have gotten that far.

I'm running a compilation just now, will check for any linkflags
failing/needing changes; but I now think that's less likely to be the
case.

Whatever the underlying cause happens to be, its immediate effect is
disabling the ld to find the lib where those puaComboBox and
puaSelectBox (inherited, I think) methods should be linked from as the
error message says.
