I wasn't planning on looking into this until the weekend, but for some reason 
I woke up extremely early this morning and figured I might just as well do 
something useful. I've just committed a backport of a better route finding 
algorithm from CVS/HEAD. This algorithm doesn't use the offending copy 
constructor. Please try and see if it works. 

I'm still at kernel 2.6.18.2-34-default, OpenSuse 10.2, gcc (GCC) 4.1.2 
20061115, which apparently doesn't crash on this, so I'm still a bit in the 
dark whether this really fixes the problem.
