The 3D model has brighter lettering in its texture, so you can copy the file $FGROOT/Aircraft/Instruments-3d/kap140/kap140.rgb to $FGROOT/Aircraft/Instruments/Textures/KAP140.rgb (overwrite the file that is already in $FGROOT/Aircraft/Instruments/Textures/) and you should get a more legible KAP140.
