I am not sure what you mean by "a separate project."  The scenery used
by FG is created from publicly available datasets using a software suite
named TerraGear.  It's not part of FlightGear per se, but the folks who
work on TerraGear are mostly (all?) folks who also work on FlightGear.
Periodically, Curt Olson uses TerraGear to create a new version of the
world scenery; I'm not sure to what degree that's done in sync with FG
releases.

Are you speaking of where these things are located (i.e. the river
isn't where it should be), or the visual appearance of the areas along
rivers/lake edges/city boundaries?
