If you want a flying altitude record, check out Eva "Birdy"
Wisnierska, a (the?) German hang glider champion. During a
competition, she got sucked into a thunderstorm and was lifted
to, I believe, 426xx feet, and SURVIVED. She trimmed her glider
to turn away from the cell and descend when she realized she
couldn't get out of the updraft and was going to lose
conciousness. About 10 minutes later she was back at 20xxx feet
and came to, and put the glider into a steeper descent to get
back to warmer altitudes. She had to have skin grafts on her
nose and one hand due to frostbite, but didn't lose anything.
Her portable GPS recorded the whole flight.
