Dear pilots,

in the near future I'll be building/upgrading to a new pc. Linux
compatibility and optimising for Flightgear are the driving criteria. I
have a few considerations for which I seek some advice.

dual core vs. quad core. If I understand correctly, for many games dual
core is still preferred to having quad core, but FG might be different,
I don't know. Also future changes in flightgear could justify a quad
core. I think of FGCOM, more complex weather, scenery and AI models etc.
But again, a dual core might be faster doing all these in parallel. Also
less cooling is nice.

memory is cheap, so it'll be 4 GB.

graphics card: Most advice I heard/read regarding 3d and linux is to
stick to Nvidia. My budget is around $250. By the time I'll order an
Nvidia 9800GTX could be in reach. Are there other concerns such as
taking a slower gpu but with more vid memory?

I really like the paris scenery, but am currently landing with 5 fps.
What hardware is able to display Paris in 30+ fps at high resolution? (I
know, this depends on many factors and settings, but just for a rough
idea.)

Thanks for any advice and help.

Martin
