There are several 172 aircraft and one of these is the IFR view where all you 
see is the panel.  I suspect that you selected the IFR panel 172.  Try another 
aircraft and see if that helps.

The online docs have details about joystick configuration.   Have a look and 
ask questions if there is something you don't understand.
