Thanks for the reply Jon

Well I am using openSuSE11.2 RC2 and X is using

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.32-pkg1.run

kernel which I compiled with my CPU type and not i586.  So I have 
2.6.31.5 and it is in /lib/modules/2.6.31.5 and /boot
I am running NVs .run mentioned above.  I suspect it is the problem.  I 
do have a NV bootsplash and glxgears fails (as suspected)

      glxgears: Error: glXCreateContext failed.

I am compiling as I type a true kernel.org 2.6.31.5 and will try with is 
a 180.17.run after rebooting
