Check the permissions on /dev/dsp. I have openSuSE 11.3 and to get
Amarok (an mp3 player) to see the audio I had to set /dev/dsp form 660
to 666. So, change was as root. "chmod 666 /dev/dsp".
If your system uses udev then it will go back after a reboot.
