OK, I figured it out.  First off, as I said, it was an old lib.  Second, 
the user that was having trouble, fg didn't set the sound card to ALSA 
default; there was no sound card defined.  And lastly, the master volume 
for that user was set to 0.  Not sure what I did in the reinstall, but 
clearly I hosed that one user.  No problem, it works.
