..which driver, ati, radeon, radeonhd or fglrx?  
(The ati "driver" is a wrapper for radeon.)
Try one or both the other two drivers to see if it 
a shader or some such bug or a driver bug, your card 
is new enough to do FG all right, and old enough 
to be well supported by at least radeon and fglrx.
