That's shell error.

Q: I am getting a message "arg list too long"
when I execute a command to show all the files
in a very large directory (thousands of files).
How can I get around this error?

A: If you remember shell basics,
the shell will expand file expressions such
as ls * into a long (sometimes very long) line
before passing the results to the command. The
maximum string of characters allowed for this
buffer is reported by the command (9.x and
higher):

getconf ARG_MAX

which is typically 20478 or about 20 KB.
The ARG_MAX value includes the total number
of characters in the environment plus the
argument list passed to a command. It is not
specific to any particular shell.

Pigeon English? ;)
