That's shell error. Q: I am getting a message "arg list too long" when I execute a command to show all the files in a very large directory (thousands of files). How can I get around this error? A: If you remember shell basics, the shell will expand file expressions such as ls * into a long (sometimes very long) line before passing the results to the command. The maximum string of characters allowed for this buffer is reported by the command (9.x and higher): getconf ARG_MAX which is typically 20478 or about 20 KB. The ARG_MAX value includes the total number of characters in the environment plus the argument list passed to a command. It is not specific to any particular shell. AS> what a fuck?
