If I recall correctly, someone posted that the command
snmp-server if-index persist writes if-indices to a file
in nvram which has a size limit, and which can be overwritten
by config files and who knows what else.  So the effectiveness/
reliability of the command is determined by the amount of 
memory you have, relative to the number of interfaces.
