Could not confirm; I just checked out latest 1.3.x, and did:
make distclean
./configure --enable-shared
make
..and it all built without errors.
Are you using other configure flags, or do you have any
environment variables set in your shell that might be affecting
configure? (CXXFLAGS, etc)
