To Matt: I don't know if there are still systems that don't have select() or that have bugs in select(), so that someone would like to use poll() instead. Since this has obviously never been an official (configure) option, I wouldn't mind removing the USE_POLL option entirely. Does anybody know if we can safely remove the USE_POLL alternative, i.e. if select() is available and reliable on all supported platforms? If there are no definite answers to the USE_POLL question, I'll close this STR in a few days (with solution).
