If it works on Fedora (64-bit) after the patch, it's okay - but does it break other distros? I don't think so, and the patch looks plausible. Maybe we can just do it and wait and see... FWIW: on my Ubuntu 10.10/64-bit, /usr/lib64 is a symlink to /usr/lib, thus it would probably be okay for at least 3 major Linux distros (Fedora, Ubuntu, SuSe). Ubuntu doesn't seem to have "check-rpath", though.
