The previous fixing attempt did not work with underscore characters.
Back to as it was before.

The problem is that, under Linux, the bottom of one line is on the 
same pixel as the top of the next one when characters underscore
and A with umlaut are considered. Thus, clearing the background
enough to prepare for A with umlaut also clears any underscore 
that happens on the line above (see attached capture.png where 
pixels have been enlarged).

This does not happen on Darwin + X11, though: the underscore
does not collide with pixels from the next line.

I see no solution.
