Regarding macro use, the macros really have to exist in the example, since the syntax of the external program (in this case, 'ping') differs across platforms. I don't think VS build files are /required/ (it can be an 'exercise to the reader' to make build files for it ;), but it does help for code testing. I've been using my own 'by hand' maintained gmake oriented Makefile.MICROSOFT to test-build the examples under VS.
