Manolo,
After working through some issues with reversing the initialization code
so that FLTK gets initialized after Tcl/Tk, our program successfully makes
it through startup and appears (didn't test thoroughly) to work. During
the initialization code, a warning message is displayed which I've never
seen before:
"2011-03-29 13:11:51.766 vmd_MACOSXX86_64[7400:903] _createMenuRef called
with existing principal MenuRef already associated with menu"

The VMD initialization otherwise looks normal:

Let me know if you have a suggestion regarding the "MenuRef" warnings...

Do you think the cocoa patch you sent me could go into the mainline FLTK,
or is it merely a short-term workaround?

Cheers,
  John
