It's good to have a clean access to the internal steps of character composition. However, input via the character palette is removed by your patch. So I believe I can't commit it in its present stage. Also, file src/Fl_compose.cxx appears in the x11 and the mac patches, so it's unclear what changes to apply. Under Mac OS, if you add the "input menu" to your menu bar (Language and text system preferences), add several languages to this menu, and request keyboard viewer with this menu, you'll be able to test character composition with any language and keyboard. Dead keys are orange colored in these keyboard viewers, and some languages require to press the alt key to reveal dead keys. The Vietnamese keyboard is especially dead key-rich.
