Yes, it sounds like a vacuum cleaner..
I think of that as an old school power saving feature
where its so noisey, you don't want to leave it on for long..

Yes, as described in my comment in the STR, the \" stuff
works fine on Irix.
Just checked osx 10.4.11, fedora3, irix6.5, Ubuntu 7.04
all fine on those too.
