Well, based on the (frankly still very limited!) testing I've done so far, I'm veering towards pushing for the Fl_Device patch being included in 1.3 and just going for it Real Soon Now. We need to warn people that 1.3 is a transient version as we move to the future, and that the ABI may be unstable for a while, and then be prepared to fix the bugs as they come in...
