I had this problem too, and Manolo explained the effect:

This seems to be a problem of evince (and maybe other viewers) that
use letter page format by default. Since ps has its coordinate
origin at the lower left corner, everything is shown too far on top
of the page. This should not happen if you use letter format for
printing to the ps file. Can you confirm this?

My experience showed that ghostscript can convert the ps file to pdf
(ps2pdf), and the pdf can be shown with evince properly. I didn't try
other viewers though.

IIRC the page format is included in the ps file, thus this really
looks like a bug in evince (and others) - but maybe we're also
missing something that could be written to the ps file to make it
work with theses viewers...
