Yes, I believe you can test compose characters with any keyboard.
You have to define a compose key, if you don't have one already 
defined. For this, use the options of the
keyboard layout in the keyboard preferences. 
For example, I use the right alt key
as a compose key. Then type for example
<compose-key> , c
to obtain this letter: ç
