This one is mainly because Greg was asking about getting it to build on linux without XFT enabled. So, this build now seems to be OK on linux either with or without XFT enabled. I don't think I broke anything in the process... In particular, Greg, can you let me know if there's anything you find in the non-XFT builds, please.
