Stan, I don't know the answer, but an additional (possibly unhelpful) observation is that I had some code that sort of did the same (i.e. didn't reliably restore the cursor) but I noticed that the behaviour seemed to vary depending on which window manager I was running at the time. Also, it behaved differently again on win32...
