There were some changes made since 1.1.7 that might affect this, but you report that 1.1.x.r6020 manifests the same failure, so I don't know what else to suggest... I suspect this usage is different from what the fluid authors envisaged, so you may be breaking "exciting" new territory here. Probably best to file an STR for this, I think.
