Ya, I can replicate OP's problem using the 'editor' demo on Fedora3
with the 1.3.0 tar file I dl'ed a few weeks ago:
1) Run test/editor
2) File -> Open, enter /etc into the pathname prompt
3) Scroll down, then try to pick one of the files

I just pulled the latest svn 1.1.x and rebuilt, and the
test/editor demo in that version did *not* show this problem.
I did not try dl'ing 1.1.8 final, but I'm assuming 1.1.x is the same.
