I don't really like compiling from within X. Especially, but not only, when 
running a system update, which also updates X, a window manager or a desktop 
environment, I think this wouldn't be a good idea. Shouldn't do any harm using 
X, when updating X, but I'm a bit cautious.

Nevertheless, compiling a software package, even X software, should work 
without X, not only because configure, make and package managers of some 
distributions are CLI apps.
