Yes, custom labeltype can be a way to do other tricks as well. There was discussion here to have a "html" label with different fonts, colors etc. The labeltype which would interpret the ordinary null-terminated (utf-8) label as "html string" (with all the measure and drawing stolen from help view) could be a useful labeltype too.
