If you're getting this error while building FLTK on a debian4: ---- snip checking for X... no configure: error: Configure could not find required X11 libraries ---- snip
Then the apt-get's you might be missing:
apt-get install libx11-dev
apt-get install libxt-dev
.note libxt is separate from libx11.
