Last time I did this, we used Xfree86. Worked OK. I would probably opt
for Xorg these days, but you do not like that option, I guess.
There are a lot of things you can configure in Xorg (or XF86 for that
matter) at the time of building the server to limit its memory footprint
or otherwise tailor it for an embedded device, but you need to go
elsewhere to find out about that, it would be way off-topic for this
list.

There is a port of fltk for NanoX, but it is produced and supported
elsewhere, so we can not help you with that. Code generally needs a fair
bit of tweaking to work with NanoX, so I don't think a regular fltk
tarball will work without modifications. I may be wrong, so you could
just give it a try, see how you get on.

There's a fair chance that Kdrive or TinyX might Just Work, so you could
try them, see how you get on. I don't have any recent experience with
these though, so can not say how well they work nowadays.
