It gets it from the event system of whichever WindowManager/ OperatingSystem you happen to be running, not from a simple pipe as such... There was some discussion of this a while back (which I can't now find) and Greg posted an example (probably on his website) of his approach to doing this, and I posted an example (which I also can not now find) of how to go about poking simulated keypresses into the fltk event queue.
