Try Fl_Browser then.
That should be there, even in the very old versions of FLTK,
and will show multiline text with scrollbars. But with Fl_Browser
you can't do character-at-a-time text selection.
Otherwise, I'd suggest either trying to backport Fl_Text_Display
to your old release, or try forward porting your code to work
with the newer fltk releases.
