It used to be the rule *everywhere*, but the internet is now swamped with people who think the net was invented last week and who are generally unfamiliar with the rules of etiquette that apply.

"Top posting" is usually frowned upon. You failed on "trimming", by the way, when you replied to my post and failed to trim away the spurious rubbish that the mail-server here had appended at the end. Since you are a programmer, we have to assume that you are very familiar with using a text editor, so it seems reasonable to expect that you are able to trim away the dross.
