One thing - Harvey, I don't know what platform you are on, but is it Windows by any chance?
I have an incomplete recollection that there is something distinctly odd about the delivery of enter / leave events on win32 hosts, because of the way that MS handle the propagation of the equivalent events in their window management layer. So it is possible the effect you are seeing is peculiar to Windows.
