Rumour has it that the cygwin folks have (once again, in my bitter experience, I'm no longer a cygwin fan) set out to really &^%$ things up by shipping a UUID lib that links to the one they use for X11 builds, so if you do a "no-cygwin" build it links that lib rather than the MS UUID lib, and thereafter you are basically hosed. The workaround appears to be to move aside their UUID lib stubs so that the MS UUID lib gets linked instead. Or dump cygwin and use Msys/mingw instead. Guess which option I favour? Note that the cygwin folk seem to be slowly withdrawing support for all the "no cygwin" stuff, so there will likely be more of this in the near future...
