OK - I favour XFT across the board... Once you have to start rendering
non-ASCII text, well, XFT handles those fonts better...

I'd be inclined to leave this as-is, for sure.

If it's just freeing memory on app exit, let the OS do it, it will
usually do it in a smaller number of bigger chunks, so that's better
than trying to manually release lots of little bits piecemeal...

Similarly for a lot of file handles and so forth, though closing them
explicitly might help with flushing buffers through etc...

If the resource is something that would still be help, then you need to
release it explicitly of course.
