If it's just freeing memory on app exit, let the OS do it, it will usually do it in a smaller number of bigger chunks, so that's better than trying to manually release lots of little bits piecemeal... Similarly for a lot of file handles and so forth, though closing them explicitly might help with flushing buffers through etc...
