Greg, if my post sounded critical, please accept my apologies, as that wasn't my intent at all.
A few years ago I faced a similar problem, and put together something using Fl_Scroll, Fl_Pack etc. It took me quite some time to get all the kinks out. What I didn't realize at the time was that my use case, which involved potentially millions of little widgets, was well beyond the capabilities of the design. So I ended up starting over. I was trying to save the OP the bother of repeating that experience.
